May 22, 2007 Chase
Saint Peter, Kansas tornado event
Another overhyped day in the 2007 tornado season (like the April 24, 2007 Nickerson tornado) as chasers everywhere were
focused on rural Kansas for another day of tornado excitement. I followed this storm as the first supercell was developing near the
I-70 town of Collyer. The first supercell went on to produce a brief funnel cloud as it tracked northeastward towards Saint Peter and
Hill City.
The first supercell fizzled out as the second one was developing to the southwest of it. These supercells were high based
and produced very beautiful mesos. As the second supercell fizzled, a third supercell developed to the southwest of it.
This supercell was the magic one as it produced a nice cone tornado between Saint Peter and US Highway 283. I was at a slight
disadvantage distance-wise when it came to the tornado along with being out to lunch on my photography skills, but in
all a very interesting chase and very lucky to escape 2"+ hail by about a minute.
